Our Dear Leaders
So….your thoughts on this episode of the season that’s picking up?
What did I think of it?
Well, I’ve been pleased by the latter half of this season. You know, like when you’re on a rollercoaster ride and when you’re first sat in your seats ready for the ride, an old granny sits infront of you, and you think ‘oh crap, i’m gonna be smashed in the face with her false teeth.’ Well, that was the Scrubs Med School 901-905 for me. However, from 906 onwards, the quality got better and better, you know, like the big hill you climb at the start of the ride…only to be strongly let down by last weeks 910 episode. I thought ‘un’ raised it’s head so many times that I wasn’t going to waste my time writing anything about it. The trio ‘Unrealistic, unbelievable and unfunny’ were back. So, I was a little bit worried about this episode…
Well guess what, in keeping with the rollercoaster ride metaphor, and also thinking last week episode was a big downer, ‘Our True Leaders’ was a big, uhm, upper. I mean hu-uuu-ge upper. Move aside ketamine and cocaine, Scrubs #911 is in the house. And for the record, I thought – and still do – that 911 is a crap boy band.
OK, so first, yeah that country-and-western hoarse voice Denise was sporting – SEXEEE – OK, over it. Also, it was cool to see the crying-in-the-shower scene flashback (and for the record, no, I don’t think chicks crying in showers are hot). Not only adding more depth to her character, but also rejuvenating some of the old Scrubs fantasies where a character’s past is relived in their head which we the viewer get to witness. I got very worried with how Denise’s character was handled with her sudden soppiness in the early episodes. It was totally bizarre and well, naff.
It was great to see classic Cox giving out one of his lectures, again, throwing the episode back into the more traditional parable format which long time viewers are used to, however I felt that Cox’s part wasn’t actually that well written. I understand he’s to take a back seat and all, but that’s no excuse for not giving him a huge speech every now and then. And ‘Hell Week’? Huh? It was mentioned, like, twice? Where was Cox’s fantasy of him dressed as Satan, laughing at the students as they toil with menial jobs in hell with fire burning at their feet and if they fail they get thrown into a big pit of fire? Infact when was the last big fantasy sequence? I understand the budget was low and all, but really, this is not reality TV where we watch disillusioned kids trying to sing. Please give it a bigger budget. It’s worth it.
Yes, I think long-time viewers would have cottoned on to what Cox was doing as soon as he told Drew not to speak to them, making the episode as predictable as…uhm, something very predictable – however, this didn’t take away from the enjoyment of it. And, this is perhaps the first episode where the title actually related to the content of the episode.
However, it also made me ask, who exactly is “our” referring to in the titles of this season? There’s only been one voice (one girl…one vision…) – aside from J.D. of course, but those episode were so absolutely traumatic, they’re erased from my mind. As there were a gazillion characters to introduce with this new format, it’d have been nice to have separate narration voices instead of having to wait ten/eleven episodes to learn something about a character. Ohh…So you’re from a fishing family…Oh OK, your childhood isn’t an important part of you seeing as you’re the protagonist…
So, to summarise. Coolio, Daddio (but needed more Elliot). And just like a jackass reviewer who pulls one-decimal place numbers to denote the quality of an episode from his/her arse, I figure I could totally do the same. So, with a magical, patent-pending (should that be patient-pending) equation that barely fills a university chalkboard like the good equations, I’m gonna give this episode a…Heh, wait, you didn’t think I’m that stupid do you?
The future
I know a lot of people want Denise / Drew to take over narrating, but do I think Lucy should continue narrating? Yes. Watching the season through the eyes of a student is good – after all, it is called ‘Med School’, and not ‘Denise’s and Drew’s Underachieving View of Med School Students’ (DaDUVMSS for short). Do I think Lucy’s character could have been written a lot better. Of course. Though, the acceptance of Lucy being a #2…Mhh I’m not sure if I like the idea of Drew taking over narration.
So, what did you think of Our True Leaders?

I don’t like Lucy at all, I’m sorry. She is the only neww cast member I haven’t started getting into. This was the first time I laughed at Drew. Well, seriously whats up tih Denise? She can’t go from ultra, emotionless tomboy robot into the character they turned her into for this episode. I guess the episodes are still getting better. Lucy’s character just isnt consistent. They are making the drstic changes it took the first series a few season, in a few episodes with them. I’m still saying they need a good dramatic episode. Turk and Kelso were awesome in this episode. Haha, Kelso is like the best!
I think this season keeps getting better and better! This episode was great, and at the risk of being blasphemous, better than most Classic Scrubs eps. About the character development mentioned by PotatoSkinta, in the old Scrubs Elliot went from being a bit cutthroat and take charge in ep 1 to being self-conscious and repressed by ep 2 or 3. Carla went from finding Turk immature to hooking up with him in two eps too. Anyway, I think certain characters, like Denise, have to be given more dimension if they are to succeed as main characters. Characters like the Todd can stay as one note personalities because they are not main characters. So Denise had to be given layers.
To recap, it’s a shame the ratings aren’t there, cause I’m starting to like Med School better than most of the latter Scrubs seasons.
One question I do have about characterization during this season, is anyone else confused by Dr Cox’s man crush on Drew? Why is it that he views Dew as a potentially good Dr, so he is supportive of him, while he viewed JD as a potentially good DR, and has to this day belittled him?
